In the Small Kitchen
I designed ‘Backed by Love’ as a reminder of my first knitting lessons with my grandmother: I clearly remember us sitting in the small kitchen. A flower pot stood upside down on the burning gas cooker, heating the room. There was no hot water, no bathroom either and the toilet was outside in the courtyard. But I was allowed to learn to knit!
With those much too long needles and my much too short arms, I did it: stitch by stitch, needle by needle. With every stitch my grandmother taught me to knit, she passed on a stitch of love. I don't remember anything about my very first patch, but I do remember that a few weeks later I conjured a first jumper from my needles: a sleeveless cardigan with dark blue and white stripes.
